How to prevent a drain from clogging

A clogged drain can be very annoying, especially if you are in a rush and have to stop to grab the plunger and get everything unclogged in order to get ready to leave the house. Clogged drains are also a danger to your entire plumbing system as anytime a drain backs up, it builds pressure in the pipes that can lead to pipes busting and major repair bills. Whether you have already experienced a clogged drain and had to clear it on your own or had to call a plumber to take care of it for you, you need to know a few things that you can do to help prevent your drains from becoming clogged and possibly causing a great deal of damage.

Drain Covers

Using a drain cover, specifically a mesh cover or a plastic slotted drain cover, will help prevent large pieces of food or hair from slipping into the drain and clogging it up. You should use these covers in every drain in the home to ensure that all drains remain safe.

Using the Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal is a great convenience when you want to toss dishes in the sink without having to toss uneaten foods into a garbage can. It’s nice to be able to simply let them fall down the drain and push a button to eradicate them. Unfortunately, using your disposal too often can lead to clogged drains and can even destroy the disposal. If you have room in your yard, try making a compost area where you can toss leftover foods to dispose and use to fertilize the grass or a spring garden. This works out well not only for the garden, but it also assists with prolonging the life of the disposal and keeping the pipes safe from clogging.

Have the Drains Cleaned

If possible, you should contact a plumber at least one time each year even if you do not have clogged or busted pipes. This way, you can have them come out and give the pipes a good cleaning to remove any grime that may be clinging to the inside of the pipes and building up.

You need to also watch what guests or family place in the sink when they in the kitchen. Homes with children in them have often been found to have small toys and other oddities located in the drain pipes because a small child has played in the water and left a small toy behind. Keeping a close eye on the drains and doing what you can to help prevent clogs can keep the repair bills down and help save you the annoyance of a clog as well as a great deal of money over time.
